Renamed Myanmar by current military junta, Burma continues to be under sanctions by the United States for human rights violations. There are a number of tribal groups with the Burmese constituting the largest in population. Most believers are from tribal groups other than the Burmese.
As a result of the work of Adoniram Judson and other missionaries, there is a significant number of Baptist Churches, though many are liberal today. There are also many small Bible colleges and a few seminaries.
OTAN is assisting national believers and churches to train their people for ministry and send out church planters. These believers face great difficulty as the government opposes any attempts to expand Christianity. New church buildings are no longer allowed and there is a crackdown on house churches.
